I'm crying tears of relief that the big Style Weekly restaurant issue is finally on newsstands (right now!) and no one's going to ask me who I think should be restaurant of the year. Again. With examples. At last, I can stop eating out for a while and get back to cooking again.
It was a hard, hard decision, my faithful readers, and annoyingly, I didn't get to make it all by my lonesome. But then I'd have to write it all, and that really would be a nightmare, don't you think?
I agree.
Fortunately, the actual heavy lifting was done by my indefatigable editor, Deveron Timberlake, along with serious groundwork by critics Joe Cates and Don Baker. Below you'll find links to my contributions but I do recommend stopping by one of those red boxes and picking up an actual paper copy. It looks so much better in print.
The Best Dishes with Joe Cates

I really need to make that trek to Millies. I remember the most amazing adobo style dish that was reminiscent of the mainstay of filipino cuisine at Millies. I've never had any of the best 10 dishes...but the one that I am most interested in tryin out believe it or not is the hotdog from Joeys. And about umami, I get my quick fix from knorr seasoning...even ketchup! Although I think a little fish sauce fixes bland taste of food that salt cannot seem to wake up.

Please explain the addition of Dd33 for those of us who have been there and were sadly disappointed at the food and the exorbitant price.

The list is a collaborative work.

"The list is a collaborative work." That says it all. Thanks!

Because Richmonders and often Richmond food critics have a thing for overpriced places with average or mediocre food.....the former Dogwood Grill and the Frog and the Redneck being prime examples.

Great articles, I am new to RCH and enjoying eating my way through the city. Favs so far are, Millie’s, 8 1/2, Rustica, Akida, just to name a few. One thing I cannot seem to find is Mexican. I am from Chicago and a big fan of Rick Bayless, is there anything in the area similar to Fonterra Grill in Chicago or the original Border Cafe in Santa Monica.
Thank you to all RCH fellow foodies for all of the guidance.

Let me begin with a BIG thank you to you and all of the other RCH goodies out there I have found here and on other blogs. I have recently relocated from Chicago and have been very surprised and impressed with many places here in RCH.
I have been eating my way through the city since September, a few of my favorites are, Zed Cafe, Millie’s, 8 ½, Rustica, and Hard Shell.
The on thing I have not been able to find (very surprisingly) is Mexican. I have hit a few places on the south side as well as Bandito’s and Mexico near short pump. I am looking for a more modern/authentic take. Having lived in Chicago for many years I enjoyed Rick Bayless’ Fonterra Grill and Topolobampo or something along the lines of the original Border Grill in Santa Monica.
Thank you all,
David
